Magnificent 1991 Gibson Les Paul 1956 Reissue Goldtop, from the period known among collectors as “Pre-Historic”, prior to the launch of Gibson’s Historic Collection in 1993.
These early reissues of 1950s Les Pauls represent a particularly interesting period in Gibson’s production: they were the direct predecessors of the later Historic Reissues and were produced in considerably smaller numbers than modern R6 models.
Gibson Pre-Historic
During the 1980s and early 1990s, Gibson began revisiting some of the specifications and aesthetics of the original 1950s Les Pauls. These guitars are now commonly known as Pre-Historic Reissues, as they predate the official creation of the Gibson Historic Collection.
This particular example, made in 1991, is a reissue of the 1956 Les Paul Goldtop, one of the most iconic configurations of the original Les Paul.
The combination is unmistakable: Goldtop finish, two P-90 pickups, ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece.
It is precisely this configuration that distinguishes the 1956 specification from the earlier 1952–1955 Goldtops and anticipates the basic architecture later used on humbucker-equipped Les Pauls.
This guitar
This Pre-Historic features a beautiful Goldtop finish that has developed plenty of character over the years, showing natural signs of use consistent with an instrument more than three decades old.
It is equipped with two P-90 pickups, one of Gibson’s classic combinations and an essential part of the character of a ’56 Les Paul: highly dynamic, with prominent mids and a distinctive sound that occupies its own territory between the clarity of a traditional single-coil and the punch associated with a Les Paul.
The guitar is completed by its characteristic cream pickguard, Gold Top Hat controls, ABR-1 bridge and stopbar tailpiece.
On the back of the headstock we find the serial number:
1 5156
A particularly interesting Les Paul not only as an instrument, but also from a collector’s perspective, as it belongs to the relatively short Pre-Historic period immediately preceding the creation of the Historic Collection.
A precursor to the Historic Collection
Pre-Historic models occupy a very particular place in Gibson’s modern history.
They represent the period in which Gibson began seriously looking back at its original 1950s Les Pauls and producing increasingly faithful reissues inspired by those guitars, before the concept was formally established with the arrival of the Historic Collection in 1993.
As a result, these guitars have an identity of their own and are particularly appreciated by enthusiasts and collectors of early Gibson Reissues.
This 1991 Les Paul 1956 Reissue Goldtop is a magnificent example of that era: Goldtop finish, P-90s, ABR-1 and all the personality of a Gibson made more than 30 years ago.
An uncommon and highly representative piece from one of the most interesting periods in the recent history of the Les Paul.
