Mark Knopfler
En enero de 2008, Mark Knopfler adquirió la guitarra a través de Phil Harris Agency.
Knopfler pasó tiempo tocando la Travis Bean y explorando su particular sonido para valorar cómo podría encajar en alguna de sus canciones. Finalmente, según la información publicada por Christie’s, no llegó a utilizarla en ninguna grabación publicada.

Travis Bean TB1000 Artist
Travis Bean ocupa un lugar único en la historia de la guitarra eléctrica estadounidense.
La compañía fue fundada en 1974 en Sun Valley, California, por Travis Bean junto a Marc McElwee y Gary Kramer. Su gran innovación fue sustituir la tradicional estructura de madera del mástil por una pieza mecanizada de aluminio Reynolds 6061-T6.
Esta estructura no termina en la unión con el cuerpo, sino que se prolonga a través del instrumento hasta el punto de anclaje del puente. Sobre ella se instala un diapasón de madera, mientras que el cuerpo queda integrado alrededor de la estructura central de aluminio.
El resultado es una construcción extremadamente rígida y estable, además de una respuesta sonora muy característica. Las Travis Bean se hicieron especialmente conocidas por su extraordinario sustain, resonancia y ataque, características que continúan diferenciándolas de prácticamente cualquier otra guitarra eléctrica de su época.
La producción original de Travis Bean terminó en 1979, después de fabricar aproximadamente 3.600 guitarras y bajos. De ellos, se estima que únicamente 755 unidades correspondieron al modelo TB1000A Artist, lo que convierte a las unidades originales en instrumentos especialmente escasos y coleccionables.
Esta unidad
Esta guitarra corresponde al modelo Travis Bean TB1000 Artist, fabricado aproximadamente entre 1976 y 1977.
Su característica estructura de aluminio mecanizado presenta el número 647 estampado junto a la cejuela.
Cuenta con acabado natural, dos humbuckers con sus características cubiertas estampadas “TRAVIS / BEAN”, puente montado sobre la estructura de aluminio y el inconfundible clavijero abierto característico de Travis Bean.
El diapasón es de palosanto de Brasil (Dalbergia nigra), tal y como consta en el Condition Report elaborado por Christie’s.

This Travis Bean was formerly owned by Francis Rossi, guitarist and frontman of Status Quo.
According to Christie’s documentation, Rossi reportedly used the guitar to record “Accident Prone”, the Status Quo single from their 1978 album If You Can’t Stand The Heat.
Rossi himself documented his connection with the instrument:
“Bought in England early 70s, used on ‘Accident Prone’ single. High output once warmed up, plays well…”
An exceptional provenance linking this particular guitar directly to one of Status Quo’s classic periods.
Mark Knopfler
In January 2008, Mark Knopfler acquired the guitar through the Phil Harris Agency.
Knopfler spent time playing the Travis Bean and exploring its distinctive sound to see how it might fit into a particular song. According to the information published by Christie’s, however, the guitar ultimately did not make it onto a record.
The guitar remained in his collection until it was included in The Mark Knopfler Guitar Collection, the landmark Christie’s auction held in London on 31 January 2024.
This particular instrument was offered as Lot 88, described by Christie’s as:
“Travis Bean Guitars, Sun Valley, California, circa 1976-1977 – A Solid-Body Electric Guitar, TB1000 Artist.”
Travis Bean TB1000 Artist
Travis Bean occupies a unique place in the history of the American electric guitar.
The company was founded in 1974 in Sun Valley, California, by Travis Bean together with Marc McElwee and Gary Kramer. Its defining innovation was the replacement of the traditional wooden neck structure with a section machined from solid Reynolds 6061-T6 aluminium.
Rather than ending at the neck joint, the aluminium structure extends through the body to the bridge mounting point. A traditional wooden fingerboard is bonded to the neck, while the wooden body is built around the central aluminium structure.
The result is an exceptionally rigid and stable construction with a highly distinctive sonic response. Travis Bean guitars became particularly renowned for their extraordinary sustain, resonance and attack, characteristics that continue to distinguish them from virtually any other electric guitar of their era.
Original Travis Bean production ceased in 1979, after approximately 3,600 guitars and basses had been manufactured. Of these, it is reported that only around 755 were TB1000A Artist models, making original examples particularly scarce and highly collectible today.
This Guitar
This particular instrument is a Travis Bean TB1000 Artist, manufactured circa 1976–1977.
Its characteristic cast and machined aluminium structure is stamped 647 at the nut.
It features a natural finish, two humbuckers with the distinctive “TRAVIS / BEAN” stamped pickup covers, a bridge mounted directly to the aluminium structure and Travis Bean’s unmistakable open-headstock design.
The fingerboard is Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra), as specifically identified in the Christie’s Condition Report.

The guitar displays genuine playing wear consistent with an instrument of this history, including visible finish wear in several areas of the body.
